March Madness? Take it Outside - Go Deeper! A Two-Minute Meditation

When the fever pitch of spring basketball collides with longer days and warmer weather, we might get caught up in the communal excitement, but it's all the frenzy outside ourselves bouncing around, just pure fun and an entertaining diversion. We might end up on the couch for hours, sedentary, nothing stirring our body, imagination and spirit besides a buzzer-beating bracket-buster.

What if March Madness is also about rewilding our own soul?

Here's a two-minute meditation to get your soul-starved body back into spring alignment, a chance to go deeper inside your own enchanted life and celebrate with abandon!

It starts with a first, fierce step.

First, amble outside. No, don't run. Don't aim to do something. Just mosey. Make it a purposeless walk. And turn on the senses.

Second, open your EARS. You heard it right. Listen with lupine ears. Quiet your breath, your rapid eye movement, and your interior chatter. Listen. Where is the nearest birdsong? Can you hear water moving? Can you hear branches shifting? Chipmunks chittering? Squirrels making a mad dash overhead in the canopy? Your own heartbeat. Listen with your soul.

Then, pause. Feel a nearby stone beneath your feet. Or gently touch a budding leaf. Or that rascally canine who just sauntered up to be near you. Deep breath in while the trees breathe out. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Let your skin breathe.

Next, notice the aroma of Earthy you, Wild you, Playful you. Notice the pungent scent of spring soil, perhaps the compost bin, the red wigglers surfacing, or the spring bulbs unfolding before you. Maybe the lilacs are starting to pop. You are being invited to an olfactory feast. What's your favorite scent? Explore.

Then do what your creature-kin have done for centuries. Try the local fare. Find something bitter or sweet or tangy or minty in your herb garden and enjoy it. Why not take that budding asparagus head and pop it into your mouth? Your eyes will water with dandelion or jasmine tea. Taste the beauty and savor it.

Finally, open your eyes. Not just your peepers, but really see the beauty around and within you with the eye of the heart. Now, what do you see? Who or what needs your love and attention in this big, beautiful blue ball we call home? What part of who you are right now is longing for sunlight, warmth, water and nutrients? Where do you feel green, tinged with new life and promise? What stirs your passion, ignites your gratitude and stokes your imagination?

Now, you're ready. Embrace your day. Go deeper.
